Abortion, in its most familiar definition, means the evacuation, i.e. removal, of the embryo in the uterus by medical methods. For this reason, it is also known as baby abortion among the people. However, abortion is performed not only in cases of unwanted pregnancies, but also in cases where there is a medical reason, especially in medical problems that occur in the early stages of pregnancy.
Legal Abortion Week
The legal limit for abortions for the purpose of termination of pregnancy is 10 weeks from the date of the last menstrual period.
Above the 10th week, voluntary termination of pregnancy is not legal in our country. However, in the presence of a severe disability detected in the baby or in cases where the continuation of the pregnancy will endanger the mother's life, the pregnancy is terminated with the decision of the health board. Abortion above the 10th week is called illegal abortion.
Vacuum Abortion
Today, abortions are mostly performed using the vacuum aspiration method. This technique is much less damaging than curettage.
In the vacuum aspiration abortion technique, disposable sterile cannulas are inserted into the uterus through the cervix and the pregnancy material is extracted with an injector called a carmen, which provides negative pressure. This procedure is repeated under ultrasound guidance until it is certain that there is no tissue left inside and takes approximately 5-6 minutes.
What should be done after an abortion? What should be taken care of?
- Normal eating and drinking can be done 1-2 hours after the abortion procedure. It is useful to avoid foods that cause a lot of nausea on the same day.
- If the procedure is performed with sedation anesthesia, activities that require attention such as driving should not be done for 6-8 hours.
- Medications prescribed by the doctor (antibiotics, painkillers, etc.) should be used completely, and blood incompatibility injection, if any, should be given within the first 72 hours following the abortion procedure.
- For the first 1 week and 10 days, pain like menstrual pain and some bleeding, but not too much, are expected.
- If there is a lot of bleeding or pain, it is appropriate to contact the center where the procedure was performed.
- No bleeding after the abortion procedure is not abnormal and is not a cause for concern.
- A follow-up visit is required approximately 2 weeks after the procedure.
- Sexual intercourse is not recommended for the first 2 weeks following the abortion procedure.
- You can take an outpatient shower on the same day after an abortion, but you should wait 2 weeks to use the bathtub, jacuzzi and pool.
- The day after the procedure, the woman can go to work.
- It is not recommended to drink alcohol during antibiotic use.
- The first menstrual bleeding occurs 4-6 weeks after the abortion, some may have a decrease, this is expected.
What are the Risks of Abortion?
Abortion performed by experienced and knowledgeable people using the correct technique (vacuum aspiration) has almost no risk, but since it is still a surgical procedure, it is appropriate to mention some risks.
- Development of infection in the uterus,
- Uterine perforation,
- Piece retention,
- Bleeding,
- Adhesions in the uterus due to excessive scraping (asherman syndrome),
- Failure to achieve pregnancy,
- Anesthesia-related complications.
Almost all of these are preventable complications. If the sterile environment is followed, different cannulas are used for each patient, the uterus is evaluated with ultrasound before and after the procedure, and appropriate antibiotics are used after the procedure, the possibility of encountering these problems is almost negligible.

Abortion price determination may vary depending on the clinic where the operation will be performed and the decision of the physician. Whether the materials used in the procedure are disposable or not, whether it is performed in a sterile environment or not and the experience of the physician are among the factors that determine the price.
